Following intensive negotiations over the last weeks,
sources confirm that Russia has successfully signed military alliances with
Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan.
It appears that the original intention of the negotiations
was, as some commentators have noted with no small amount of concern, to revive
the old borders of the Soviet Union. A number of other countries approached by
Russia were violently opposed to the deal, and rioting has broken out in
Astana, the Kazakh capital, following protests against the deal.
Ukrainian sources confirm, as suggested earlier today, that
a significant amount of Russian troops are massing in southern Belarus.
