Carcassonne recaptured by French military after surprisingly long campaign

After a surprisingly prolonged campaign and numerous reinforcements, the French military have retaken the beautiful medieval city of Carcassonne.  Over 10,000 French Islamic State (EIF) fighters held the fortified city with surprising rigeur and have only just been beaten.  The French military are praised for their drive and determination, but suffered surprisingly badly in terms of casualties, with over 500 killed.  Over 1,500 EIF fighters have been killed and over 10,000 captured.  It is thought 10s of thousands of others fled the city and have escaped to other places in France.  Fort Boyard remains under EIF rule.  However, for now, the beautiful city of Carcassonne has been reunited with the Republic - Vive la France!
