Independent sources confirm that the Baikonur Cosmodrome in
Kazakhstan has been attacked by angry protestors. A small number of individuals
infiltrated the base and planted basic explosives on a number of information
terminals. All of the attackers were found and killed by Russian forces after
resisting capture. The world’s capability to launch craft into space, perhaps
most importantly to resupply the ISS, has been impaired for the time being.
The following statement was released on the matter:
"The
Russian Federation would like to inform the international community
that a terrorist attack was stopped by the Russian forces in the south
of Russia. All terrorists have been killed. We suspect foreign
involvment in the affair. The repairs will start as soon as possible.
The Russian Ministry of Defense would also like to state at this time that the forced deployed to Belarus are a part of a joint-CIS cooperation exercise. The exercise was primarily focused on Civil-Nuclear Emergency disaster relief, and was conducted around the Pripyat region- Chernobyl."
Despite the Russian statement, we can confirm that no foreign powers were involved in the attack on Baikonur. It is currently unclear whether the Russian intelligence is even aware of this.
