In light of the recent announcement of the UK calling two referendums on its membership of the European Union and NATO, the United States urges those entitled to vote and the political representatives to give full consideration to all the implications that a vote to leave such institutions would bring about. The European Union has been a key body in promoting peace, prosperity and power in Europe, especially in the devastating aftermath of World War 2. Moreover, NATO offers a strategic advantage to Member States in coordinating defence policy. It is the view of the United States that such membership would provide ongoing benefits to the United Kingdom and exiting these bodies would weaken its position on the global scale. Nevertheless, the United States wholeheartedly respects the United Kingdom’s sovereignty in the matter and hopes all proceedings occur peacefully.
